One of the curses of the t’interweb is that of duplicate content. Search engines hate it, but for some online businesses it’s impossible to avoid, especially those sites that allow visitors to sort search results. So when Google, Yahoo and Microsoft all announced that they were uniting to provide a method to reduce duplicate content, there was much rejoicing in the webmaster world. And now they’ve been joined by Ask.com. You can catch the Matt Cutts interview on the subject over at WebProNews
Using the tag couldn’t be simpler, you simply specify the canonical version in the head section of the duplicate content pages:
Google has so far not made it’s use a directive, rather the search engines use this as a hint, a “suggestion that we honor strongly” is how they put it, but are more likely to use it if the URLs use best practices, such as:
The content rendered for each URL is very similar or exact
The canonical URL is the shortest version
The URL uses easy to understand parameter patterns (such as using ? and %)
It is interesting to hear Matt highlight the other methods of cutting down on duplicate content, especially through the use of sitemaps. Correctly structuring your xml sitemap for Google also helps you to educate the spider on the order of importance of a site’s pages to YOU, so it is something I recommend to every client.
We’re a bit behind on this story as Avatar have spent the last week moving home, but for those who missed it when it was posted at the TrendLabs Malware Blog, Google Videos was targeted by blackhats, and instead of legitimate videos, some 400,000 queries that returned video results were found to have a single redirection point. This redirection eventually led to malware download and execution.
What is interesting to Search Marketers like myself are the methods used by these criminals to entice web users onto these sites - good old (or bad old) SEO. A number of domains are maintained, and these include keyword rich pages (with correctly optimised meta-tags, I’m guessing, although the article doesn’t mention this), and these pages then rank highly in the search results when users type in their search strings. As most users trust search engine results to be relevant, they then unwittingly visit the website, and leave with the malware attached.
Most of us who use Google regularly are already well aware of searches ending up on a false Anti-Virus site (and how tedious it can be to escape the sites clutches), and hopefully none have been duped into allowing these programs to run, but this is a new step in targeting search engine visitors. So, beware.

October has been a bad month for Yahoo and Microsoft as far as their share in the US search market is concerned, with Google increasing its share at their expense. A new report from Nielsen Online shows that in the month of October Yahoo saw its share decline to 16.9%, a drop of 12% YOY, and Microsoft’s Live Search fall to 11.4%, a drop of 19%. Meanwhile, Google confirmed its status as the main force in search by increasing its share of the market to 61.2%, an increase of 8.1%.
Most surprising, perhaps, was that in the month leading up to the presidential election the total number of searches fell by 2% overall. These figures are, of course, solely for the US market, and it will be interesting to see how the global figures pan out.
